I'm guessing this pic was taken from about half a mile. I took several pictures but as the thing was headed toward us we boogied out of there when it got less than a quarter mile away. No damage was done but it was one of the spookiest things I've seen.

Somewhat ironically, this shot would not have been possible if it hadn't been for hurricane Charley which destroyed the shopping center which used to sit in that vacant lot in the foreground. This was ground zero for that hurricane which happened less than a year before this waterspout, adding to the spookiness because of the freshness of the memory of the hurricane.

I drive through this area every day going to and from work.

Danger is everywhere, man. Probably the most dangerous thing that most people do is driving on the highway and most of us do it every day.
While hurricanes are very destructive, they are fairly easily prepared for and usually give lots of warning thanks to today's technology. The problem is, many folks don't prepare in advance and don't pay attention when the watches & warnings go up. That's what happened to New Orleans the year after we got our asses kicked. You gotta have your own supplies and a plan to get to a safe place with those supplies 'cause when nature puts the whammy on ya help can't always get there right away.
