I've canoed for 25 years but never kayaked until today and it was great! Picked
up this inexpensive, used, sit-on-top kayak yesterday and I think I'm going to
really enjoy it. It's lighter, faster, and more manouverable than the canoe, of
course, but it's even less tippy too!

Nice.

Just bought the boy one a few days ago, had mine for a year now, got it at
Dicks Sporting Goods, they put the Kayaks on sale once per year (this year's
sale has ended here), they're usually $300, got both of mine for $200 each, I do
have to say though, the second one is a little lighter than the first one I
bought.... lighter means thinner "plastic," not necessarily a good
thing.

Anyway, they can't be beat for the price.
Check out some Kayak Reviews....

Also, if you have any rivers around you zoom in here and check the levels.

And quasi, if you haven't taken it on a small river with some current yet you
are missing out. Kayaks seem to take about 20-30% less time on the same float as
a canoe.

I picked this one up for $180 including a paddle; it sold new for nearly $400.
The kayak paddle I recently got (and loved) for my canoe is a better one but now
I have a spare. I did this shake down cruise on a stretch of water where I
recently timed myself in the canoe using my old single blade paddle and the
kayak with kayak paddle are 30% faster. No fast moving streams around here
(which suits me just fine 'cause I'm not in it for excitement) but I'm curious
to see how it does on a breezy day with some moderate to heavy chop; alone in a
canoe is a bitch on a windy day. I checked the reviews of this model on
paddler.net before I got it and they were very good. Aside from the minor
inconvenience of having no storage compartments or tie downs I'm very happy with
it.

Be careful if you ever go into any waters that those damn asian carp have bred
into, they will land in your lap, literally, I had a handful of them bounce off
the front and back of my kayak while on the Mississippi before..... they'll make
your heart jump.... then you'll cuss profusely.......

One of the only bad things about a kayak is the storage issue, just not very
much room.

None of the asian carp here that I know of but we have the native fish the
mullet which frequently jump far out of the water. Once one jumped right in my
canoe and scared the hell out of two of my kids when they were seven or eight
years old.

mullet don't get 30-40 lbs though (i don't think).

No, they don't, but when they jump in and start floppin' around behind the
kids, one of whom was terrified of gators and sharks (and incidentally is 30
years old today), they seem much bigger. The guy I bought the kayak from knows
someone who was struck by a jumping ray; they get huge.
