Turbos are for pansy asses. Get a blower, and become a real man
Mrkim Report This Comment Date: September 11, 2010 01:45AM
Really? So you must think robbin HP to make HP is superior to using waste
energy to make HP huh?
Blowers are for lazy wannabes easily satisfied by making "some" more
HP.
Turbos are for thinkin people wanting to actually generate all the HP possible
in the most efficient manner.
Then again, maybe you know of some mystery super secret blower that you can drop
on a streetable engine that can yield 30+ lbs. of boost on demand with no
appreciable HP drain. If you DO know of one you should become their marketing
rep, there's a ton of $$ to be made if one actually were to exist ... which it
doesn't

Just announced this week that Formula 1 cars in 2013 are gonna be 4 cylinder
1.6 litre turbo charged producing about 650hp. Amazing performance, but they
wont sound the same

Mrkim Report This Comment Date: September 11, 2010 12:15PM
Awesome! That will bring about all kindsa new developments in turbo
engineering! I'd say it will likely also lead to a serious learning curve all
around for the drivers, tuners and engineers. At only 650hp it will also slow
track speeds waaaaay down too, which I'm guessin is probably the impetus behind
the change anyway.
You're sure right GAK, those lovely F1 engine sounds will be a thing of the
past. There's nothin even close to the howl of an F1 car burnin up the track and
that will definitely be missed

It was pretty telling in how the boost was hittin watchin him feather it
through the turns. It sure left no dount about when the blow off valve was
opening either.
Cool video dude, thanks

Yeah there is amazing potential with even small engines so it might be a good
racing when turbos return to F1.
My all time fave example of what can be done is the Porsche 917 from the
70's.
It peaked with a 5 litre flat 12 turbocharged that put out 1,580bHp before all
the rules as LeMans changed to save lives.
But it only lapped as fast as the 1.6 litre Renault...

One of the coolest and wisest teams I can recall was Dan Gurneys run Toyota GTP
car team before the series dissolved. He took a turboed 2.1L powered car and
consistently whipped every car in the field, even with continuous weight jacking
in efforts to level the playing field. This team was so dominant that in the
last season the team failed to enter several races just so someone besides
Toyota could post a victory.
I've often wondered why turbos have never been used in cars in the Top Fuel
class. With todays level of engine management technology I feel certain a
turboed V-8 would be capable of waaaaaay outproducing the HP the blower motors
currently make.
An idea put forth 40+ yrs ago by David Vizard in how to effectively eliminate
any boost lag was so simple and straightforward it was amazing. He used a
nitrous shot to instantly rev the engine to a boost producing range and then had
the nitrous shut off automatically using a Hobbs switch. Sheer genius!!
Back to the crandall1970s comment, I see there's been no attempt to justify
their all to easily de-bunked BS statement

some cat down in Houston
