In other parts of the US these are called both Mountain Lions and Cougers. In
Florida the same species is called the Florida Panther and is very rarely seen.
I was once very far upstream on my favorite creek in a remote area when I got
out of my canoe to stretch my legs onshore. As I ambled about I saw in a muddy
spot a fresh track of one of these with a pawprint the size of my outstretched
hand. I didn't stick around to see if I could spot the critter.

I think technically they're cougars and are the penultimate feline predators on
the north american continent. I think big cats are really cool and a damned
shame they aren't often suitable as pets. Yeah I hear ya quasi, I don't think
I'd have gone into a rendition of "here kitty, kitty" either
