Most Mac users I've know are a bunch of stuck up little snobs that don't know
jack shit about technology and talk like they're king shit because they have a
Mac, like they are so much smarter and better than everyone else when the
opposite is generally the truth. They are too stupid to use a PC and that's why
Jobs and Wozniac invented dumbed down machines and charged twice as much for
them than they are worth.
I have nothing at all against the machines themselves, they are what they are,
but the majority of users are as bad as fucking deadheads and rastafarians for
making a fucking religion out of shit.
I had a friend in college that was die hard Mac fanatic and managed to study
computer programming and wound up struggling working for a company making
mainframes using 386 processors running Unix. I laughed in his face over that
turn of events. You're precious Mac SE don't do you much good now does it buddy?
Maybe if you had learned a little more about PC architecture you'd be in better
shape working there. He didn't last long there and wound up making sales calls
for Cisco.

Macs are no better or worse than any other computer system. But Mac users do
seem to act more aloof than others. Mac users generally can't help anyone with
problems on other systems but users of other systems can help mac users with
problems.

Macs are fine computers for what they are. I wouldn't mind having a Mac to play
with at all. Since they moved to BSD-Linux as a base OS I think there has been a
lot of improvement but I have to admit that I kind liked the old Mac OSes. It
was different. Sometimes different is a refreshing change.
My Mac user friends are fine people, I just wish they'd tone it down a bit on
the enthusiasm bordering on fanaticism. Nobody likes a snob, no matter what
they're being a snob about. It's all changing now anyway so it's a moot point I
suppose.

you could have a better system for free that looks just like a mac and spend
the money you would have wasted on the mac OS to put 5-10 times better
components in your box and then have room to upgrade it with more drive / memory
space.

When I tried a Mac OS a cuppla yrs ago it was their newest one. I didn like
the way it worked, but it did work pretty simply ... till I broke it by tryin to
upgrade the hardware in the machine.
Trust me, I can break any OS .... I'm good at it. I'm so effective they oughta
pay me to find the flaws in systems, 'cause I invariably will find 'em with all
my fiddlin about
When I figured out I had to keep runnin that same clunky hardware I shit canned
it.
I never have figured out ... does Mac keep their list of hardware compatibility
short for effectiveness and overall system safety of just so they can get a
better deal from their vendors and then rape the customers

You can't run a legit copy of OSX on anything but Apple hardware. It's not for
white-box systems and technically isn't legal as it's against the terms of the
software license.
That's not to say it doesn't work, some systems are compatible enough to
install/run it but it's a specific hardware subset that has drivers. Regularly
you also need a hacked version to put in the boot loaders etc for non-EFI
systems (Macs use EFI, PCs use a BIOS).
They do it because it means they don't have to manage drivers/support for a
whole bunch of shit. That's always been the reason Windows sucks. Windows of
itself is okay - it's trying to keep compatibility with every bit of hardware
and software ever made which fucks it up, and as soon as MS removes support for
anything people cry for blood.
By keeping everything to a limited little supportable space, it means you CAN
make a system where pretty much everything just works, especially when you're
responsible for the hardware too.

I like being able to replace hard drives, upgrade memory and replace defective
dvd drives easily and relatively cheaply. Not so with the Mac is it?

Yeah that was a Hacintosh machine I picked up. It had the right hardware to
accommodate the OS and make it all work out. I picked it up for $200 so
The only hardware I've seen yet that Ubuntu had any real problems dealin with is
ATI video cards. Wireless cards that work outta the box are a short list too,
but if you know that before you buy 'em it dudn much matter.
And ... when you have problems in Ubuntu there's a lot of online support for it
which is very beneficial when you're as talented as myself at tearin up an OS

ATI cards have been problematic with Linux for years. Some work, some don't.
You sort it out sooner or later or get a different video card.

Yeah, at least support for the more common nvidia cards is pretty straight
forward though they seem to have dropped the ball so far in 11.04. It says my
Nvidia card is an ATI and that's just flat out wrong

Ten years ago a G3 could be fitted with 8Gig of RAM.
PC simply could not run software with large graphic based files because it had
insufficient RAM and the CPU spent most of it's time doing Bill's bidding
instead of running your program. Even a UNIX server could not be diddled to work
like a Mac.
These days it doesn't really matter what you use at home or work.
Also 10 years ago, webservers were 99% UNIX boxes. Now they might represent less
than 50%, pulse should know some figures.

I think it's a little higher than that still, but the #1 web serving software
is still Apache, something like 75% of sites - be it Windows or some form of
Unix base.
We don't use Apache anymore though, we've moved away to Lighttpd and naturally
everything is Linux.

Back in the 80s I laughed at my Mac fanatic buddies because I was doing DTP
just fine with Arts & Letters and Pagemaker running under Windows286 on a
cheap 8MHz PCXT clone with NEC V20 processor, EGA graphics and LIM spec expanded
memory while they were all saying "A PC can't do graphics, you HAVE to use
a Macintosh."

I'm from the printing trade, and a big file is several gig and a
"nice" pic is 500Mb.
Say your making just one page in a magazine and it has 4 pics. Even today, it
takes 7 seconds for these files to open.
Once the page is made and everything is scaled down it's much more workable.
But working with raw files was NOT an option on anything but a Mac 10 years ago.

What woulda been cool to use would have been one of the SGI graphics
workstations. One place I worked had a research group who used them but they had
their own tech so I didn't get to play with them.

I got my hands on a Scitex workstation, with computers runnings big rolls of
magnetic tape etc, it filled the room.
Basically it's what you needed to do image manipulation back then, such as
changing the colour of a car or putting someones head on another persons
body.

This is how old I am... I remember my dad taking me to a BofA open house when I
was a 6 year old kid so we could look at IBM's most advanced computer system for
commercial use they were showing off there. This was a punch-card
reading/sorting system and had about 10 huge machines the size of small pickup
trucks daisy chained around the bank lobby taking up half the room, which was a
huge lobby. It had the big tape reels and big ass noisy line printers too. It is
amazing how far computing technology has advanced in my lifetime. People have
1000s of times more computing power in a small calculator than that behemoth
had.

mid 60s and stayed with 'em til he retired in the 90s.
He used to bring home stacks of those old magnetic tape roll holders. Everyone

My dad worked for Westinghouse and later for Raytheon and he'd bring some of
those big tape reel holders home once in a while too. He started out as a
draftsman and became a mechanical/technical engineer for Burroughs but that
usually involved circuit board and chassis layout design on a drafting board.
You know, one of the drafting table jockeys we all love to hate.

When I was around 3 or 4 we got a
ColecoVision for Christmas. That was awesome.
My first use of PCs was XT/286s, Dad had one and friends etc. First one at my
house was an Amstrad 386 when I was 12, followed by a Commodore 486 which I
eventually upgraded to a 486 DX2/66 with 8 meg RAM.

I got into the game really late. My 1st machine was a 1 gig Athalon machine
with 512mb of RAM. Before that I had a WebTv for 5yrs,so it was a HUGE step
up.
Nowadays my video card has double the RAM and MUCH faster RAM than even my 1st

Pretty amazing how the technology of simple devices like pulses phone exceed
what once was considered a killer PCs specs
Here's another cuppla 'puter fun facts: for years now the average car has had
more computing power than was used on the lunar lander and ... even the simplest
of todays PCs are multiples of times faster than the triple redundant systems
used on the space shuttle which are something like circa 1980s
machines/systems.
And remember, it wasn't all that long ago there was a ban on exporting gaming
consoles to the USSR because they had better chips than the Rooskies were
building at home
