In 1361 the Danish King Valdemar Atterdag gave the citizens of Visby an ultimatum: fill three oil barrels with silver or watch your city burn! The merchants of the trading city are said to have filled the Danes’ barrels in less than a day.

Visby is in Southern Sweden on the Island of Gotland. Southern Sweden is ethnically Danish (Cimbri Tribe) and was once part of Denmark, but it was taken over by the Kosma tribe of Sweden's north. There was a savage insurgency by the Cimbri in the south had recently failed, when the Danish King landed at Visby and effectively drained Sweden of a lot of money (it was a main trading port).

There are mistakes in the painting: the architecture is from the next century, the breed of dog didn't exist at the time and no married woman would have had her head uncovered.
