Welcome to cynicism. I learned that here in the mid to late 1990's when John
Howard became Australia's Prime Minister. It wasn't anything on the news but
things said in person.
A more accessible guide, if you can stomach it, is The Triumph of the Will, the
ultimate Nazi propaganda film. It's available in all good academic shops and
clearly shows Hitler and the key Nazis, not in uniform, calmly delivering clear,
neatly encapsulated statements. No dramatic acting. Everything they said to
those young men who trusted them, they then did something else, sometimes the
exact opposite. Those young men were told their country was being attacked (a
staged attack on the Polish border, with prisoners dressed in German Army
uniform shot dead to look like an attack by Poland), and sent to die. A year
before the U Boat fleet was ready. One or two years before the army was ready
to invade Russia. But so what? The Nazis didn't care.
I recommend a Russian film, White Tiger, all the way to the end scene.
