an ancient military masterpiece from a private Anglo-Greek collection: a bronze Corinthian Helmet dating to the 6th/5th century BC. The Helmet: A lovely rounded, intact skull part distinguishes this bronze helmet. It has dot perforated nose, lower margin, and eyebrow lines, a very robust nasal. The facial apperture is also lined with holes. There is a sloping neck guard lined with perforations. The small triangular notches on each side have perforations for attaching a chinstrap. It enjoys a green and reddish-brown patina. The inside has very much a uniform green excavated patina. The helmet is in excellent condition with no restorations. Height: 8 1/2 inches. Width: 7 1/4 inches. Overall length: 9 inches. Provenance: From the collection of an Anglo-Greek gentleman. Acquired from a German auction house in the 1970s. An outstanding and unique helmet in immaculate condition. For similar, sold with a reserve of $125,000, see Lot 64, Sotheby's New York, Wednesday November 29, 1989. The Corinthians were outstanding Greek Warriors and Corinth was a very prosperous city in antiquity, riveling Athens. The Corinthians always seemed able to amass large numbers of Greek Warriors or Hoplites, with little warning.
