It is on a reservation... Back then...They shot and killed a native (who picked up a gun left unattended) and then high tailed it back to the main pary.

Actually, L&C did make it to the Pacific Ocean, but they didn't find what they were looking for, which was the path of least resistance through the Rockies.

Turns out that path is: Take I-80 west from Ogallala, Nebraska => Laramie, Wyoming => Salt Lake City, Utah, then I-15 North, then I-84 West => Boise, Idaho => Portland, Oregon.

Actually there are less hills if you take US Hwy 30 west from I-80 at Little America, Wyoming, into McCammon, Idaho, run I-15 north into Pocatello,Idaho, then get on I-86 west and run until it ends at I-84, then follow I-84 west on into Portland, Oregon...

Above the 49th parallel... almost into Canada. Yes they made it all the way west but this is as far north as they traveled. The Marias river ran into the Missouri and was so large at the time that they didn't know what channel was the actual Missouri so they sent a party to explore it. Killed a native then called it good.
