This is one of the errosions of our freedoms that is indeed scary. Thank god I'm not running a fucking Windows OS with that neat little back door in it for them to wriggle their way into my machine ... easily

And if you want to see something really scary, watch the movie,"Enemy of the State", with Will Smith and Gene Hackman, Makes one wonder if this is going on right now.

Really folks, anyone who believes these powers will NOT be abused, either currently or eventually, by the fed are truly naive.

As much as I love my country, I damned sure ain't dumb enough to think such powers will NOT wind up being abused !

i'm all for the govt. having whatever access they deem necessary to protect our country and enforce laws. if you don't agree than you're doing something illegal that needs to be accounted for.

i claimed that when i was doing all kinds of illegal activities in the past as well.

I suppose that's an easily defenseable position to take fossil, but ... the core issue to me is that it is a chiseling away at the basic right to freedom from unreasonable searches that we've enjoyed as a part of our way of life here.

And ... be VERY "careful with that axe Eugene" when you say "whatever access they deem necessary to protect our country and enforce laws" . Wide brush stroke statements like that are exactly where excessive intrusions upon our freedoms begin, whether they actually be reasonable or just in the long run ; >]

You could take the recent FCC mandates regarding indecency in broadcasting, which are so vague and broad in their scope, as a great example of how easily govt. powers can be manipulated to address whatever target they deem appropriate "at the moment".

Again, the judicial system will ultimately be left to decide the validity of both causes, though that typically only comes after continued abuse of civil rights.

Do I see myself or my actions as real targets of either of these infringements upon our civil rights ? Hardly, but that doesn't mean someone else might not hold a different view.

So, the old saying still seems incredibly valid in this issue to me "Careful what you ask for, as you may surely get it" .

freedoms.....sure, but illegalties.......whatever is necessary.
sure that's broad, but laws are written to be changed

Actually fossil, what's goin on these days is an actual subversion of the actual legal process, which is what I take issue with.

My understanding is that they are currently bypassing the "due cause" area and starting wiretaps etc WITHOUT the necessary judicial branchs review and granting or denial of a search warrant, which is the accepted and time honored procedure. This actually borders, if not oversteps completely the legal bounds of this process, depending on whom is discussing it. To me, it indeed oversteps it.

This is the 2nd major deviation from our guaranteed rights under the constitution in my mind since 9-11. The 1st was when suspected terrorist were held past the normal 72hr period without being charged or released and that their rights to confidentiality with their attorneys has vanished like a fart in the wind.

Like I mentioned previously, any time such powers are used, they are just as likely to be abused before the judicail system will reign them in and in the meantime, civil right will just take a back seat while it get sorted out and THIS is what's scary to me !
