its because when you play against better teams the fifa give you more points in the ranking, and because France won the world cup in 98, each group have different teams, that if you beat them it give you different kinds of points because its not the same beating Brazil(#1) than beating American Samoa(#205)... also in the ranking they count all kinds of cups, like the Euro, Confederation, Gold Cup, etc.
