Re: Image comments for Gun Deaths per Capita

I took my own advice and researched the gun deaths per capita. I excluded suicides as I figured if a gun wasn't available another method would be used. Info was from Wikipedia, which in turn referenced Krug and UNODC. There was no information available on Angola, Turkey, Pakistan, Russia or China. Britain's number was so low it does not regiter on the graph (0.15 per 100,000).

Two things stand out to me. Firstly, if you are in a developing country either pray that they have a decent police force or hire good security. Secondly, while it's not a one to one relationship - if you are in a "1st world" country, the more guns there are the more likely you are going to die from one.

I am a big beleiver in the saying "Lies, Damn Lies, and Statistics" and know that this graph proves nothing. The next step is to compare murder by firearm to total murders, cos it could be argued that if a firearm wasn't available, would the murder have occured some other way? That said though, logic dictates that, given that guns are a relatively easy way to kill somebody, if more guns are available more deaths will occur!
