While I don't agree with all your points, bigbrutedan, I can really get behind your statement that many Americans are programmed to be overextended and greedy. I think it's a pretty even split that the blame for this mess is the desire of so many people to have more than they can afford (and more, and more, and more) and the willingness of the lending industry to foolishly loan money to those people.
