Often, some say usually, the worst damage along the coast is from storm surge, similar to a tsunami. In our case the hurricane was relatively small and fast moving so our little city was spared the surge but was blown to pieces by the wind from the direct hit. The wind gauge at the hospital that's about 3 miles/4.8km from where I'm sitting broke in a gust of 175mph/281kph.
