I actually took this shot a week ago but today when I went by here there was a
five or six foot gator right about where I'd been when I took the pic. Makes one
want to take a refreshing dip in the river.

And people say Australia is full of deadly things. About the worst thing we get
around here aside from the occasional whitetail or even rarer redback spider (I
fucking, fucking, fucking HATE spiders by the way) is a pissed off possum or a
neighbour's vicious cat.
Sure, up north there's all the salt water crocs money can buy.. and out west
there's the occasional surfer eating shark.. but nothing particularly sinister
down here.

I think `possums are one of God's ugliest ideas. I hate raccoons too but they
do look a bit better. I don't have a particular problem with spiders. I am
bigger, I can squash them. I tend to leave em alone or try to move them outside
where they belong if they get annoying indoors, if I don't just smash em and be
done with it. We have all kinds of spiders in the PNW. they are not endangered.
Not much terribly dangerous either except for the brown recluse but they aren't
that prolific and not here at the coast at all.

In all the years I've been here there've been no attacks on the Peace River or
it's tributary streams but there have been a couple of deadly attacks, one in an
area pond (a 4 year old girl) and another in a canal that connects to the Myakka
River (a grown man who jumped in to cool off after mowing a lawn), but I don't
think I want to take the chance of being the one to break the trend on the river
because the gators are definitely around. I've always been cautious when
paddling and even more so in my kayak that has me basically sitting on the water
than I am in my canoe which offers some protection, but either way, because even
the kayak appears so large and bright to anything in the water, I think the risk
is minimal from the generally nonagressive gators. I stay well off shore in
deeper water and avoid tight places as much as possible so as to not crowd any
that may be around.

we have big Gators in the Trinity river south of town, but if you're stupid
enough to go sightseeing in the mocha brown mud banks of that nasty ass river,
you deserve to get chomped, not to mention that's it' s the favorite dumping
spot for stiffs. I assume there are gators in all the lakes around the
metroplex, but i've never heard of a sighting.
there are also big Alligator Gar in the Trinity(6-7 footers easy) and people do
come from all over to hunt them any way the law allows. i water skiied almost
right over the top of a at least 6 foot Gar at Lake Texoma on the Oklahoma /
Texas border about 5 years ago. i swung really wide out to the right to make a
hard cut on a left turn around by the boat, and saw what i thought was a log, i
straightened up real quick to hop over it, and it splashed like i have never
seen a fish splash before, i almost went down trying to avoid it.

Pulse don't you have brown snakes where you are?
Possums in Australia are different than here in the US. Theirs are furry and
cute and ours are hairless shells with a long tail.
