clearly, punctuation and the lack of spaces before and after the markup
characters mess with the execution of the *bold* _underline_ and =ital=

As john stone said, lack of spaces and general punctuation messes things up.
Quite simply we didn't feel it an important enough feature at the time to spend
more time on. *Things* /work/ _reasonably_ well. =Italics= I think works with //
better. I can't remember if we took that feature out though so this is a _test_.
