I have a tattooed western friend who lived in Japan for awhile. A white guy. A punk rocker, actually. Tattoos all across his back and arms. Not full sleeves, but all over.
. He went to a bathhouse one time and took a soak. Soon, he found himself pretty much alone in this huge bathhouse, which was odd, he thought, but perhaps it was a weekday, a slow time.
. When he finally left the baths and walked back to the locker room, there was this huge line of Japanese men waiting on the other side of the door. He walked back along this line to his locker, but no-one would look at him - they kept their heads down.
. It suddenly dawned on him that they thought he was Yakuza. They let him bathe alone out of fear.
. He experienced amazing embarrassement.
