The pier was destroyed by Hurricane Donna in 1960 and the area did not see
another hurricane until Charley in 2004.
Twenty five years ago I was fishing with a friend at about 2 in the morning when
I hooked a stingray with a three or four foot span just on the other side of the
pier. I fought that sucker for over an hour and even when I did finally get it
to the seawall we had no way to get it out of the water anyway. My line finally
broke and he got away which was fine 'cause he wasn't anything to keep. It was
great fun though.
