competition/ demos etc...
you must master the morals, spiritual, and metaphysical nature of the arts before you can think about the self defense part. of course these take a lifetime to master. the physical aspects are just a miniscule part.

I would put my daughter in karate class just so she could learn to defend herself. It's a fucked up world we live in.
