I believe the popularity of the armed forces of the Untided States Has to do
with pride. Pride in our country and pride in oneself. The moto "be all
that you can be" is in fact the truth if one is motivated to improve
oneself and the military can accomplish that goal.

It's not as popular as it used to be. The US government has to give out large
bonuses for people to enlist or re-enlist. They also lowered the standards of
getting into the military. Now you can be over 40, unable to pass boot camp and
not have a high school diploma. So now you too can go to Iraq even if you're
old, infirm, or borderline retarded.

We used to have the draft, it wasn't really popularity, people were drafted into
the military. There have always been bonuses for re-enlistments, when I left
the military in '74, my re-enlistment bonus would have been $12,000, which was
quite a lot back then. The enlistment bonuses were for people with degrees to
attend OCS. Ordinary people don't get enlistment bonuses and they have to have
a high school education or equivilent. Used to you could join as a choice
between that or jail but now they won't take anyone with a criminal record. All
the BS about lower standards is just that, bullshit.

We can have pride in how far we have come in just over 200 years. Those of us
who are born in this country have one thing in common, we are all Americans,
regardless of race. We can fight amongst ourselves all the time, just like any
family, but let someone from outside the family start a fight with us we will
unite against them. Family is what is important and the American family can
stand strong when needed.
