This time of year in Florida is time for swarms of lovebugs. They don't sting
or bite but they make a mess out of the front of the car. I'll post a picture of
them then you'll see why they have that name. This was five years ago, the worst
I've ever seen them in over 40 years, and so far this year they haven't been out
in my area.
Anyway, in all the years I've been here I've seen rocket launches at Kennedy
Space center from my yard but never up close so at that time I had a few days
free and was able to score a campsite directly across the Indian River from the
Space Center. It's an almost 200 mile drive and by the time I got there the car
was plastered with the bugs (top picture). My campsite was under some trees and
the shade was nice - it starts to get really hot this time of year too; wakes up
the bugs - but some big birds in those trees crapped all over the car (bottom
pic). To make matters worse, when they have to scrub a launch they usually go up
in the next day or two and I had three days there having arrived on the
scheduled launch day, but when they had to scrub it that first day they
rescheduled it for a week later. Total bummer. I didn't get to see the launch,
had to wash the car twice while I was over there (and those damned bugs don't
come off easily and will damage the paint if left on too long) and again when I
got home because of the bugs which were even worse on the way back. And this was
on top of the same bug experience during a camping trip a couple of weeks
before. I'll post a full frontal pic of the car with bugs.
Still haven't seen a launch up close

Damage the paint if left on too long
? Do you have bad paint over there or do they have large stomachs (sulphuric
acid mix)?

They're very acidic
