This appears to only happen to Hobbits.

Yeah they are here now but not much we can do, it's a rather large empty place.

Nah, Hobbits have hairy feet, not hands. Feet and legs are the most often and most severely bitten place, though, from inadvertently stepping on their mounds.

They hurt at first then itch like a MF for days. This is a mild attack from a few years ago, picking up yard debris. I've been luckier at avoiding them more recently, though this past winter their mounds were more numerous than in recent years.
