I'm sure I've told this story here before, or at least part of it, but I can't
remember and my brainz is shot.
When I was around .. 15 or 16 perhaps .. I managed to secure the #1 spot on
Yahoo when you searched for "free porn" (Yahoo being the only real
game in town at that point). I created a static webpage with half a dozen or so
porn site banner ads on it, nothing else. People didn't even really know what
ads were back then, so they were dutifully clicking them looking for their free
porn.
It didn't take long before some money started coming in, just small amounts, but
because it was all American and this was the way US places did shit, I was
receiving cheques in the mail. It costs money to cash a foreign currency cheque.
Most of the cheques were for barely more than the conversion fee (something
stupid like the cheque was for around $50, but the fee was $30), so I had a
thought. My mother worked at a bank, and staff don't pay fees. So, I got her to
get all my cheques deposited.
Another thing that these US companies did was pick interesting names, probably
in the hope that you'd be too embarrassed to take a cheque to a bank and cash
it. So imagine a 15 or 16 year old explaining to a woman who has absolutely no
concept of what the internet is (had probably barely even heard of it back
then), why he was receiving cheques from "Hardcore Fucking Services"
or "XXX Mature Fuck Pics" etc. Then asking her to go to work and cash
them.
Now, I also knew that
she couldn't cash them for me, you can't do banking
services for people you know. So she'd have to ask her manager to do it on her
behalf...
Mum is ace
I'm sure she was asking "wtf is wrong with
him?" at the time.
Unfortunately somebody else ended up fucking this all up (that's another story).
But in the end, the 15 or 16 year old started receiving 5 or 6 cheques a week
for somewhere between $500 and $3000 USD at a time over a period of a month or
two.. I'm sure that all raised some eyebrows at the local bank branch

Have you got dementia? I know I have.
Anyhoo. Reminds me of the classic scam (have posted before) but you need to know
how cheques work and therefore be of a certain age.
(Oh and fukc off America with your "checks" FFS.)
Ad in paper, portrait of the Queen, ten dollars.
Mail arrives with a postage stamp that is technically "a portrait of the
Queen" so you know you have been duped.
Refund is freely offered.
Duped individual claims refund.
Cheque arrives from "Mr Kims house of massive anal dildos".
99% of people would not be able to look a bank teller in the eye and cash that
cheque.
Scam is legitamised.
I'm 9 schooners in, waiting for the Parramatta game to start. Think I'll uber
and watch it at home.
