Here in the lightning capital of the U.S., numerous pop up thunderstorms like this are scattered around most summer afternoons and evenings, the product of hot, humid breezes from the Atlantic on one side and the Gulf of Mexico on the other colliding head on over the narrow peninsula that is most of the state. This photo brings back an evening I'll never forget. In July of 1982 I was the only passenger besides the pilot in a small plane flying from Tampa to the airport near my home about 100 miles/160km distant and scattered all around the clear air space we were in, some over the land and some over the Gulf, were a dozen or more such storms randomly flashing. It was a spectacular light show.
