When a tropical system is on a general south to north path it only takes a slight shift to hit much farther up or down the coast of the Florida peninsula. Draw parallel north/south lines through the place it was expected to land and where it did and those lines are only about 30 miles/48km apart, nothing for a hurricane, but in a direct line between the points it's nearly three time that far. A few miles east or west make a tremendous difference north to south. This is why they are tracked with cones and the center line is not to be relied upon but people still complain that the forecasters "get it wrong". Titanic forces are at play and the forecasters do a great job of interpreting them and issuing warnings. We were warned, it's just a combination of geography and the vagaries of weather systems that make a difference.
