I've worked with a few Vietnam vets. Last one was at the local airport ten years ago and one day there was one of those Huey helicopters flying around so I asked him if that sound (they have a very distinctive sound unlike other helicopters) bothered him, gave him bad memories. He said no, he liked it, because hearing those choppers meant they were going to be picked up and out of bad situations they'd walked into. He and another Vietnam vet I worked with for several years in the 90's had no fucks to give after going through that. In the mid 80's I worked with a WWII vet who was the same. The guys from the 80's and 90's were also alcoholics who drank themselves to death.

I grew up surrounded by Australuan Vietnam Vet's. Mist had simply awful stories and it affected them badly.
My neighbour however was a paramedic and told us the the Seppo's never allowed the Diggers to land in a hot zone unless they went in first and cleared it. After all we were picking up their wounded mostly. The American pilots also liked to put on a show and "dance" the Hueys back at base, just a few feet off the ground.
