Built using a revolutionary technique providing greater strength for less weight, the Hurricane was Britain's main defence in early days of the Battle of Britain. It was outdated against the Messerschmitt 109, that was itself outdated by Britain's next fighter, the Spitfire. Whilst the Spitfires fought the Messerschmitts, Hurricanes downed a lot of Luftwaffe bombers. It was this combination that stopped the NAZIs from invading Britain, giving Hitler his first taste of defeat. Angry and in emotional need of a triumph, he turned East and invaded Russia when his army wasn't ready (no road building courses for artillery crews, no winter furs and so on). So we know how that worked out.
